The Captain's Clause refers to Rule I.C of the UPA Rules of Ultimate (10th edition) and to Rule 404.01 of the WFDF Rules of Ultimate, (rev 2002-01-28). The wording differs between UPA and WFDF rules, but the essence of it is that:

  • In non-tournament play, the game may be played under any variation of the rules that is agreed upon by both captains
  • In tournament play, any such variations must be approved by the event coordinator or tournament director

This rule is often used in league play to take Footblocks out of play, to change field dimensions to accommodate obstacles (such as trees, football nets, etc) or to agree upon a different time or point cap than specified in league rules.

It is used less often in tournament play, as tournament directors generally want all games played under the same set of rules.
