Man defense is when each player chooses an opposing player to defend against.

It is one of the most basic forms of defence.

Playing man on man defence requires your team to be more athletic than your opponents. Otherwise, if only one member is outplayed by the opposition, it can be easily exploited by the other team.

Man defence requires the team to force the opposition to throw to a particular side of the pitch, the rest of the team position themselves acordingly.

Essential elements that can disrupt a man defence are:

  • being able to break a force
  • being faster than your marker
  • putting fakes into cuts to get away from your marker


Essential elements that can build a man defence are:

  • breaking the force
  • being faster than your marker
  • calling switches should an offensive player break long/short
  • poaching properly where appropriate
